The Windy Season: August In The Vaal

It's that time of year when seeds scatter, ready for new homes. It's a season of acceptance, because what follows is a new beginning. August feels like a season of relief, proof of Spring..

A blackberry tree spotting new leaves

There are blackberry trees on the third house from mine, already spotting new leaves. By month's end, all of it will be green.

In the south, August is windy, and dusty too; it turns the sky a soft, thick orange, the kind you watch from behind a window rather than step into. The afternoons warm up, but nobody dares stay outside too long, especially in the Kasi. You'd end up coated in dust like the ground itself. I remember when my stockings would be almost a brown shade after school.

A woman's month, it's a cozy month in its own way.

My mother was born in August, and she's always believed her birth month carries good news with it. I've seen it happen enough times to believe it. That is why it's always a pleasure to enjoy the season.

What comes after this season feels like a real new beginning for most South Africans, my family included. I think even January knows we only humor it when we call it "the new year." August is the true countdown to a new beginning: the quiet before spring, before everything turns green again, before the seeds find their new homes. With outdoor fun here and there. If you're looking for fun stuff to do in the Vaal this season, here is a list.

  1.  Vaal Kota Fest
An event sponsored by Albany Bakeries at Emerald Casino on the 29th for family and foodies alike. With live performances and a range of Kota vendors to choose from.
Fees : R110 - R800

       2.  Vaal Car Show

This is a family-friendly car event happening at the Vaal Show Grounds on the 9th for speed lovers.
Fee: R20 - R30

      3.   Womandla Run

Since August is still Women's Month, with the national holiday observed on the 9th,  the Kasi Athletics Club has organized this event for all women who want to be a part of the fitness event. The run will take place at Bedworthpark Center on the 29th from 8am.
Fees: R60 - R120

Otherwise, if you're looking for something intimate, the local hotels and resorts offer hiking and picnic spots.

I know in other provinces the season might be different weather-wise, but the feel of spring coming is undeniable.
